Week five is almost upon us and as always we are excited to bring you our weekly instalment of IDP rankings. IDP along with receiver remains one of the more difficult to rank but we will do our best to blend start rankings with projected performance for the upcoming week. This week we will take a look at one player from each position that has been a pleasant surprise this season.
At linebacker Kiko Alonso has been a tremendous story. Alonso never seemed to regain his pre-injury tackle monster form and with a shift to outside linebacker to make way for sophomore Raekwon McMillan the smart money was on the latter pulling away from the veteran with more fantasy value. Boy, were we wrong. Alonso has been flashing his preinjury sideline to sideline quicks and has efforted his way to number two in the NFL in tackles and depending on your leagues settings he should be in the top ten (top 5 in most) for the season.
At defensive back Tre Boston has produced at a top five level with 25 solo tackles and 5 assists to go with three passes defended, a pick, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Boston’s 25 solo’s place him eighth in the NFL and fourth among defensive backs behind teammates Budda Baker, Antoine Bethea and the Colts Clayton Geathers. Boston has played almost every snap for the Cardinals and should continue to put up borderline DB1 numbers the rest of the way.
At defensive line Bengals castoff Margus Hunt has been a revelation for a surprisingly strong (stats wise anyways) Indianapolis Colts defense. Hunt has put a solid 12 solo tackles with one assist but the eye popping numbers are the nine tackles for loss and four sacks. The tackles for loss lead the NFL through four weeks and the sacks place him in the top ten (NFL leader has 5.5). Hunt has assuredly already been gobbled up by waiver wire vultures in your league but is someone that should still come at a discount in trades. Hunt started his career as a raw project but it now seems he is ready for primetime and he will have to be with the Colts squaring off against the Patriots on Thursday Night Football with rookie sensation Darius Leonard looking doubtful.
