Antonio Callaway Cited for Marijuana: Fantasy Context
The Cleveland Browns just can’t buy a break.
First Josh Gordon goes back to rehab.
Now reports have surfaced that Antonio Callaway was cited for marijuana possession mere hours before the Cleveland Browns shipped off former first round pick Corey Coleman to the Bills for a first round pick.
The good news here is that Callaway has continued to run with the first team offense despite the team knowing about the incident.
The bad news however is that Callaway is likely facing league discipline after failing a combine drug test and being arrested for marijuana possession in college. The length of the potential ban is as of yet unknown but this is yet another blow to a Browns offense that looked so promising on paper mere weeks ago.
Fantasy Context:
Antonio Callaway – Callaway was slated for a big role for as long as Josh Gordon remained in rehab and could have still garnered a fantasy relevant role in a Todd Haley coordinated offense that has proven they can support three receivers as well as a tight end and target volume heavy running back. With Callaway’s immediate future now in the air there are reports Hue Jackson is unsure that Callaway will start with the ones when preseason action begins tomorrow for the Browns. Overall Callaway’s dynasty and keeper value takes a hit as he is likely one more offense away from a league mandated year long suspension while his redraft value also takes a tumble with the length of a potential suspension unknown. Callaway is claiming it wasn’t his trees but that will matter not to Goodell and the shield.
Tyrod Taylor/Baker Mayfield – We will lump these two together as both are expected to make starts this year. Where to begin? What once looked like the most promising receiver room in the entire NFL is now at risk of being down three men to start the season. With the Browns unable to count on Josh Gordon and Antonio Callaway for week one and Corey Coleman now on the Bills both quarterbacks take a hit and look more like low floor bye week fillers.
Jeff Janis/Rashad Higgins – As the roster currently stands and if Callaway does indeed get suspended the Browns may be trotting out Jarvis Landry, Jeff Janis and Rashad Higgins as their top three wideouts for week one. Janis and Higgins would be no more than bye week fillers to start the season if elevated to these roles but Janis could become a solid depth option if both Gordon and Callaway are unable to play this season.
