Brandon Jacobs to the 49ers: Fantasy Analysis

2

Brandon Jacobs has agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers giving them one of the deepest backfields in the NFL, boasting three players with starting calibre talent.

This is a good move for the 49ers as they get a powerful goal-line back who can handle a feature back role if and when needed.

This move ensures the 49ers will have a talented backfield with or without Gore and is also a statement about their lack of belief in Anthony Dixon.

Fantasy Analysis:

Frank Gore – This signing puts a serious dent in Frank Gore’s already waning fantasy value. Jacobs is someone who can eat up double digit touchdowns which is bad news for Gore owners. Gore has also recently saw his targets in the passing game dwindle and is in danger of slipping into RB2 territory.

Brandon Jacobs – Jacobs is entering an offense that may look a little different than last years 49ers team but is entering a situation that should still allow him the opportunity to crack double-digit rushing touchdowns on the season. He will be strictly employed in a power back role, theoretically splitting spelling time with Kendall Hunter.

Kendall Hunter – Hunter’s fantasy value takes a serious hit with this news but his dynasty value is still intact as the 49ers opted for a veteran back rather than drafting another backfield runner, which could be indicative of their future hopes for him. Hunter should receive no more than 6-8 touches per game with Gore healthy but could find himself in an even time split with Jacobs if Gore goes down.

Alex Smith/WR’s/TE – Having a power back like Jacobs ensures that even when Gore is off the field taking a breather or out with an injury that the opposition will be forced to respect the run. This will help open up the field for Alex Smith to hit Vernon Davis, Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham.

  1. With Frank Gore on the field the Opposition always has to respect the Run.

The problem is that with an OLine that can’t stop anyone, the Opposition stacks the box and dares the QB to Pass the ball. With the scrub Receivers this team fielded over the previous 8 years not even Joe Montana would look good in that situation. Now they just lost Adam Snyder their best RG. Not that Snyder was Great Wall of China good, but he was their best and just signed with Arizona.

I’m glad this team got Jacobs but his signing didn’t change anything with how the Opposition is going to approach the 9ers. Staley gets consistently beaten like a drum. Goodwin may be solid for them at Center but that’s yet to be determined. IMHO, Iupati is the best Lineman the 9ers have, I think Staley needs to be moved back to RT, move Davis inside to RG and get a solid LT to protect Smith’s blindside. Staley is a solid RT. I’m just not sold on his technique on the Left.

  2. Hey Ceadderman,

I agree that the O-Line could be better, and agree with your assessments

I think Jacobs can at least keep defenses honest when Gore is not on the field or at least I hope he can
