After scoring 9 touchdowns and accumulating 856 total yards last year, Laurence Maroney remains unowned in 46% of Yahoo! Leagues. Despite last season’s career year, Lau-Money was bumped to the bottom of the fantasy draft boards due to his situation in New England. The Patriots are among the most pass-happy teams and field a large committee of backfield contributors.
However, Lau-Money’s fantasy outlook drastically changed on September 14 after being traded to the Denver Broncos. Yes, Knowshon Moreno is currently the numero uno back, but he is one play away from re-aggravating the hamstring that kept in out of the entire preseason. So who else would Maroney have to battle to get carries? Well, LenDale White was brought over in the off-season but tore his Achilles tendon and is out for the season. Correll Buckhalter was also injured during preseason and was horrible in the season opener, racking up 2.5 yards per carry on 6 rushes, including a lost fumble.
Maroney is Questionable for week 2 but considering that it is a thigh injury, it is not much of a concern in the long term. Denver Coach McDaniels drafted two big offensive linemen this year in an effort to beef up one of the smaller offensive lines in the NFL. The Broncos seem more poised to run Maroney appears to be the clear number 2 back. Now is a time to buy low because if you wait until he produces in week 3, he may not be available. If someone else in your league has already scooped up Brandon Jackson, Lau-Money may be a nice consolation prize.
