This is a surprising move considering Smith has been hurt the last two years and had quite an impressive showing as a rookie when healthy when he amassed 976 rushing yards for 8 touchdowns and hauled in 39 passes.
Of course with Best in town Smith has fallen down the pecking order and the Lions may in fact be positioning themselves to land a powerback to complement Jahvid Best who also has durability issues.
Having two running backs with durability issues is not the wisest move and the Lions have apparently taken the steps to correct that issue even if it meant letting someone they traded up for get away.
Kevin Smith is still a very talented running back and should latch on with some team as a backup back. The St. Louis Rams seem like a logical destination for Smith who would be a huge upgrade over the stable of backs the Rams currently have behind star Steven Jackson.
