Rizzla discusses the Baltmore Ravens exciting addition of Mark Ingram, and examines the fantasy context.

The Baltimore Ravens just became a lot more dangerous on the ground. Signing a pro bowl level running back like Mark Ingram is going to help Lamar Jackson tremendously. According to NFL.com Mark Ingram signed a three year deal, worth fifteen million to be the new starter for the Baltimore Ravens.

As alluded to above this is a huge move for the Ravens and Lamar Jackson alike. Ingram provides them with a stable workhorse who can stay in for all three downs. Gus Edwards was a fine and exciting running back, but his inability to provide plus ability as a pass catcher meant opposing defended knew what was coming when he was in the game. It also effectively gave LJ8 one less read on passing downs. Ingram is the best running back the Ravens have had since the infamous Ray Rice was a household name, for his fantasy football prowess.

Fantasy Context:

Mark Ingram gets a huge value boost with this news. He does not leave RB2 territory, but now has a much higher and stable floor. Ingram should easily see over 1,000 yards rushing, and should push for double digit touchdowns. Of course a draft addition could change that projection, but as of this moment Ingram profiles as a top-15 fantasy back. Congratulations to those dynasty owners who held onto him with this offseason in mind.

Lamar Jackson gets a huge boost with this news. As exceptional as Gus Edwards was as a runner, a true three down back was needed to not tip their hands as an offense. With Ingram, Jackson now has a back that has hauled in over 40 receptions in three consecutive seasons. Jackson remains an elite option in dynasty leagues and superflex. In redraft Jackson still remains a borderline QB1. He has the tools and pedigree to succeed as a passer but will need some weapons at wideout. Look for the Ravens to make some additions in the third and fourth waves of free agency or through the draft.

Gus Edwards now has a bottomless pit in place of his fantasy floor. As of this writing Edwards still projects to have a role for a team that will run at the highest clip in the league, but is a draft addition away from being a little used short yardage hammer. Treat Edwards as a handcuff and deep league best ball option only.
