Mike Williams has a chip on his shoulder and is ready to shine

mikewilliamsMike Williams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has a chip on his shoulder and that is exactly the kind of news Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans and fantasy football owners alike want to hear.

This revelation changes his rookie WR ranking and I now have him only behind Dez Bryant and Williams actually stands to be the rookie wide receiver who makes the biggest impact this year as he has already locked up the #1 role. Our dynasty league rankings also change and Mike Williams is now only behind Dez Bryant and Golden Tate and has pulled ahead of the Broncos Demmaryius Thomas.

Mike WIlliams’ draft stock plummeted due to off-field issues but there is no denying that he was a top-5 WR talent, arguably a top-3 or even top-2. However character concerns caused this first-round talent to slip to the fourth round where his name was finally called by the wide receiver needy Buccaneers.

Mike Williams says:

“I want to be the steal of the draft”
“I don’t care who got drafted in front of me, who got drafted behind me or right next to me,” Williams said. “That doesn’t matter. I feel I’m the type of player that I am, I can be the steal of this draft.”

Players with chips on their shoulders with immense talent like Williams make fantasy sports analysts like myself salivate at the potential difference that proverbial chip can make to a player of Williams’ talent. Talents like Williams are sometimes able to ‘get by’ on their natural talent and do not put forth maximum effort as a result. This is not something we will have to worry about with Williams.

Finally Mike Williams chimed in with some advice for fantasy owners:

“If they want to win, pick me,” he said.

Given the opportunity and the fact that Josh Freeman is also very high on him, I tend to agree with Pete Prisco of CBS Sports and his statement that Mike Williams might just be the next big-time receiver in the NFL.

Josh Freeman agrees:

“Mike’s a stud, man,” Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman said. “He’s made a lot of plays. He’s quickly becoming one of our go-to-for-big-play guys. I think he’s having fun doing it.”

Freeman and Williams spent off-time in the summer working out together and the chemistry is evident.

Dynasty leaguers it is time to open our eyes to the true potential Mike Williams has, and that is a potential #1 WR for 6+ years, starting this year.
