Cam Newton need not worry about who he is going to throw to for the next few years after Steve Smith agreed to an extension with the Carolina Panthers.
With no in-house replacement for the ageless Smith, many fanalysts worried about a potential major drop off in Cam Newton’s fantasy prospects when the enigmatic Smith decided to hang up his cleats.
We now know that it will not happen for at least a few more years and we are confident that the Panthers will have groomed a replacement for Smith by the time this new deal ends.
Fantasy Analysis:
Cam Newton – Cam Newton now looks like he will remain a QB1 in fantasy for the duration of his career. The scary part is that Newton figures to put up even more gaudy numbers once the Panthers acquire a legit number two receiver.
Steve Smith – As long as Smith has Newton throwing him the ball he will be a borderline WR1 with the potential to be the #1 WR on any given week. Though he is on the wrong side of thirty, Steve Smith has proven that he still has plenty of gas left in the tank.
Brandon LaFell/David Gettis – This extension assures that neither LaFell or Gettis will be thrust into a number one role their skill set does not seem suited for. LaFell or Gettis theoretically could be more productive playing across from Steve Smith than they would be as a number one facing double coverage which helps their fantasy prospects barring any new additions to the roster.
