Rizzla discusses the Ty Montgomery trade to the Baltimore Ravens and touches on the fantasy context for all of the fantasy relevant players affected.
Just days after taking an ill advised kick return out of the end zone and then fumbling the ball away in a tightly contested game between the Packers and the Rams and then sounding off on his displeasure of teammates questioning his selfishness, Ty Montgomery has found himself dumped to the Baltimore Ravens for a seventh round pick.
I'm told Ty Montgomery has been traded to the #Ravens, per source.

Anyone who was paying attention could see this move coming a mile away after time Montgomery sounded off to the press. This is a good move for the Packers as it frees up more snaps for both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. As far as fantasy football is concerned it buoys the values for both of the remaining backs as it removes the threat of the dreaded three headed RBBC.
This is a shrewd pickup for Ozzie Newsome as the Baltimore Ravens get a upgrade on Javorius Allen in the backfield and have now have someone who can actually push Alex Collins for the starting job. Kenneth Dixon sounds no closer to returning and this acquisition spells a bleak outlook for the his rest of season prospects.
The Baltimore Ravens clearly won this trade but for the Packers this deal was all about getting a return for a player they were ready to release.
Fantasy Context:
Ty Montgomery gets a nice value boost with this trade as he should step into the passing down role as soon as he starts to grasp the playbook. A clear upgrade in the passing game, I am not convinced Alex Collins (4.3) is a more efficient back on the ground than Montgomery (4.8 ypc for his career). Montgomery should see work in both the passing and running games giving him bye week filler flex2 appeal. Montgomery has never seen more than 77 carries in a season so we are not expecting him to snare the lead back job in Baltimore but he will see the field enough to torpedo the fantasy values of both Collins and Allen.
Aaron Jones is one of the big winners of trade deadline day. The Packers got rid of a running back who was siphoning over thirty percent of the running back snaps and that should open the way for Jones to see at least a 50 percent role going forward. Jones is brimming with talent and in a perfect world he would see at least 70 percent of the snaps but as echoed in our hot pickups column this week: ‘until Jones improves in pass pro and as a receiver out of the backfield this will likely be closer to a 50/50 split’. Jones is a bye week RB2 and an upside RB2/RB3 based on matchup once the byes are complete.
Ty Montgomery siphoned off 23.5 snaps & 15 routes per game from Weeks 3-6. Aaron Jones set season-highs in snaps (32) and routes (17) Sunday as TyMont was phased out: https://t.co/obABq0GkgB

As alluded to above in our take on Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams is a big winner of the Ty Montgomery dumping as well. Jones struggles in both pass pro and the receiving game so Williams is still going to see heavy snaps. Williams also profiles as the power back in this backfield and with a larger role promised he now possesses weekly touchdown upside. Williams now looks like an upside flex2 for the byes and has a chance to solidify a steady fantasy role over the next few weeks.
Alex Collins’ fantasy value takes a hit with the addition of Montgomery. While Allen was still frustratingly overly involved despite being the clear inferior talent, Montgomery has been more explosive than both Allen and Collins in terms of yards per carry over their careers and could see a larger role than Allen did on the ground. Collins’ job should not be in jeopardy here but an 8-12 touch weekly role is not out of the question for Ty. Collins will now settle in as an upside RB3 with a bench floor.
Javorius Allen appears to have one week left as the Baltimore Ravens number two running back. Allen had a solid fantasy run to start the season but the addition of Ty Montgomery represents a clear upgrade for the Ravens. Allen should still be sprinkled in here and there once Montgomery is up to speed but is now nothing more than a bench stash in 16-20 team formats. Drop Allen where needed.
