Biggest Fantasy Baseball Surprises

1

The 2011 fantasy baseball season is well under way and, as is the case every season, there have been plenty of surprises so far. These are my two biggest surprises, one batter and one pitcher, at this point in the season.

Lance Berkman, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals

Berkman is tearing the cover off the ball this season.

This is probably the pretty obvious choice, but wasn’t this guy supposed to be washed up? He had a total of 106 AB with the Yankees last season and hit one home run and nine RBI. In 107 AB this season he’s already hit 10 home runs and 32 RBI. The 32 RBI lead all of baseball. His .374 AVG only trails teammate Matt Holliday.

Berkman is on pace for the best season of his career. In 2006 he hit 45 HR and 136 RBI with the Astros. Wherever you took him in your draft, you got a steal.

Max Scherzer, SP, Detroit Tigers

After another win last night Scherzer is now tied with Angels SP Jered Weaver for most wins in the majors with six. In 2010 he had a record of 12 wins and 11 losses. He’s been recently overshadowed by Justin Verlander’s no-hit performance, but Scherzer is going toe to toe with his fellow hurler this season. He’s yielded a respectable 3.15 ERA in 45 innings pitched and is well on his way to his first All Star Game.

Verlander isn't the only Tigers pitcher dropping jaws.
