Dynasty League Dive – Week Eleven

Rizzla touches on five quarterbacks that have seen their dynasty league values altered over the past few weeks.

In this weeks dynasty league dive we will take a look at five quarterbacks that have seen their dynasty league fantasy values change over the past few weeks. In true dynasty leagues securing a long term elite option at the quarterback position can be a difference maker year to year in your weekly matchups. In smaller keeper formats deciding whether or not to keep a particular QB over another skill position option can make or break the following fantasy season. Just ask Patrick Mahomes’ former keeper owners.

Lamar Jackson made his first career start in week eleven and set several records in the process. Jackson set a franchise record for the most rushing yards by a QB, set an all time record for the most ever single game rush attempts by a QB and set the Super Bowl era record for the most rushing yards by a QB in his NFL debut as a starter. While Jackson accounted for zero touchdowns on the day it was still a promising performance that suggested Jackson does indeed have a long future ahead of him as an NFL starter. Jackson is expected to get another start this week against a lifeless Oakland Raiders team and is likely to put up a performance that will secure him the starting job for the rest of 2018 and beyond. Jackson is long gone in dynasty and deeper keeper leagues but with a so-so performance in the week eleven fantasy box score this may be your last chance to pry what could quickly become an unobtainable asset away from his current owner. Jackson has saliva inducing QB1 upside as a starter and has the 2019 all but locked up, buy low if possible.

Alex Smith suffered a catastrophic leg injury this past weekend and for all intents and purposes his career as an NFL starter may be over. Washington was always going to walk away from his contract after the 2020 season but will now be incentivized to spend an early pick on a signal caller to make the contract math work in the meantime. There have been a lot of comparisons between Smith’s injury and the one suffered by Joe Theismann, especially since they happened on the same day; and in Theismann’s case the injury was a career ender.  Modern medicine has advanced miles from where we were at that time though so Smith should be able to retake the field as supported by Ian Rappaport and David J. Chao aka the ProFootballDoc. His dynasty and keeper league value however is kaput as he was only a borderline streamer this season to begin with and will now have to deal with competition from an early day rookie if and when returns to action sometime in 2019.

Andrew Luck has reclaimed his place among the elite fantasy quarterbacks. Luck has appeared QB proof despite an markedly average supporting cast and it stands to reason that he is only going to get better when and if the Colts upgrade his weaponry this offseason. A top five QB1 once again, we are happy to be able to see one of the league’s best talents at the position ‘find his mojo’ and dispel all the doubts that surrounded him following his return after an extra season off in 2017.

Joe Flacco took a major value hit with Lamar Jackson leading the Ravens to a win over division rival Cincinnati Bengals. We do suspect that Flacco will latch on elsewhere at least as a stopgap starter, but it is clear that he will not be starting for the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. Already more of an matchup based QB2 with streaming upside Flacco’s dynasty league value will come down to his landing spot. Those outside of two QB leagues will want to cut bait on Flacco, especially at this time of the season. Hopefully you weren’t a JImmy G owner who turned to Flacco in desperation and as such you should have other comparable or better options at your avail.

Matthew Stafford has seen his production fall off of a cliff this season. Averaging a three year low in yards per attempt and his lowest yards per game in any full season he has played Stafford has found himself on the outside looking as far as it pertains to the weekly QB1 conversation. Now while much of this has to do with stronger play at the position than in recent years this is still a disturbing development for the former QB1 lock. Stafford’s numbers have only slightly dipped and most of that can be correlated to finally finding a run game but the Lions also simply do not boast the playmakers they once did giving Stafford a harder time than usual racking up consistent production leaving him with only one QB1 finish on the season. Stafford remains a borderline QB1 and could see a nice value boost if the Lions choose to add a playmaker in the 2019 NFL draft. Stafford is a strong dynasty hold even if you do not want to be starting him this down the stretch.
