Terrence Williams traded to the Houston Rockets: Fantasy Impact

2

The New Jersey Nets have traded Terrence Williams to Houston in exchange for Sasha Vujacic, a 2012 first-round pick from the Rockets and a 2011 first-round pick from the Lakers.

Joe Smith is headed to L.A. to provide some frontcourt insurance in case Andrew Bynum gets injured again.  More importantly it provides the Lakers with some cap relief, exchanging Vujacic’s $5.5 million for Smith’s $1.4 million contract.

The Nets already had Golden State’s 2012 first-round draft pick. Add the picks just received from the Lakers and Rockets and they have multiple 2011 and 2012 draft picks to further entice Denver into dealing Carmelo Anthony.

Fantasy Impact:

The only fantasy-relevant player in this deal is heading to Houston.  Terrence Williams recently produced two triple-doubles in three D-League games and has also showed flashes of fantasy relevancy at the NBA level.

Last year, the former Louisville Cardinal started ten games averaging 10.9 points, 7. 3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game in 32 minutes. This year he has been in coach Avery Johnson’s doghouse, playing in just ten games altogether.  But the fact that Houston traded a first round pick for him indicates that they see a lot of potential in the second year player.

After a horrible start, the Houston Rockets have been playing a lot better, 5-2 in the month of December.  It is unlikely a change will be made to the starting lineup, meaning Terrence Williams will play behind Shane Battier and Kevin Martin.   Although T-Will played some point guard last year for the Nets, with Aaron Brooks returning from his injury and Kyle Lowry playing well, the PG spot is already crowded.  Still, if he leaves his reportedly bad attitude (Yahoo! Sports) in New Jersey, Terrence should be the main swingman off the bench for the Rockets.

Terrence Williams is available on the waiver wire in two thirds of fantasy leagues and is worth a pickup in deep leagues and in dynasty leagues.
